Racial case study part III
Mac and Mac
One was white...... one was black.
BOTH turned away.... neither went back.

In Elementary school I made friends early on with a guy who happened to share the extremely odd name of "Mac" with me. At this point in time, that was enough to become fast friends. We liked the same things, played in the school band, took many classes together. Never brought the parents together or hung out on weekends though now that I think about it. This arrangement worked very well right into High School until one day in P.E. when an enterprising idiot by the name of Coach Pete decided to match me and a team that consisted of many of my white friends against Mac and a team that consisted of many of his black friends. Things were fine until the "white" team began to take a small lead and then it got rough. The white team looked to me to control the blacks through my black friend and the black team looked to Mac to control the white team through his white friend. After much pushing and shoving, threats and cheapshots, the game was broken up by this "Coach" as well as the relationship between Mac and myself. After yelling at each other a bit more in the locker room, we never spoke another word to each other.

MORAL: Oh here we go again. As I look at the situation now it is obvious that there were better ways to handle THAT situation. It is obvious that someone needed to take a good look at Coach Pete. It also becomes obvious that just liking a guy, sharing some interests, and having the same dumb name are certainly not enough of a foundation to build a strong bi-racial friendship on.
But it should be.
